Free Software Foundation (FSF)(Free Software Foundation, FSF ) is a non-profit organization founded in October 1985 by Richard Stollman, to support the free software movement, in particular GNU project.
Since its creation until the mid-90s the FSF's funds were used primarily to recruit developers to write free software. From the mid and late 90's many companies and individuals who write free software, so employees and volunteers of the FSF are working mainly with law and organizational issues related to the free software community
On March 10, 2001 was created the European Free Software Foundation , while in 2003 and 2005 followed by the establishment of the respective institutions in India and Latin America respectively.
Projects
The Foundation publishes Software License (the GPL and Affero GPL) and manuals ( GFDL), and runs the update process of these licenses. It keeps drafts of future versions of licenses on wiki and invites comments on them.
A special team at the Laboratory of Application FSF (FSF Compliance Lab) Foundation coordinates the activities concerning the implementation of permisions. It also answers on questions from the public for the use of licenses.
The Foundation supports some political projects aimed at protecting the free software. It fights software patents and digital rights management (DRM), as well as raises free alternatives without patents, eg OpenDocument text format and encoding audio Ogg. It also keeps a list of applications with high development priority
